To provide engineering leadership for the groceries manufacturing facility by effectively managing asset care, maintenance, and capital projects to reduce the cost of manufacture, to improve quality and to improve asset performance. To provide hands-on leadership for the day-to-day maintenance operation to reduce engineering downtime across all equipment.

Minimum Requirements

A Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering. GCC factories or studying towards is a must have. 5 years functional experience of which at least 3 years should be at engineering management level, in which a position of similar complexity has been held.

Duties & Responsibilities

Leadership: Focus the effort of all the engineering maintenance resources on meeting the following key areas of performance. Reducing engineering downtime whilst simultaneously reducing maintenance costs Successfully implement capital expenditure and cost reduction projects Reducing operational and environmental risks and improving safety and product quality performance Driving team performance and accountability Team development and succession planning Lead from the shopfloor with a visible focus on achieving daily production throughput, improved safety, and product quality. Deliver on agreed succession plans and development of the generation of leaders and specialists, overseeing engineering development programmes and on the job training. Drives Employment Equity within the plant engineering team to ensure that diversity is achieved at all levels and that statutory targets and requirements are met. Champions training and development of the team utilizing available training opportunities, apprenticeships and on the job training to improve performance and reduce engineering downtime. Contribute to the development of new training solutions in collaboration with group training specialists. Conduct regular performance appraisals with subordinates and ensure that the process is cascaded throughout the engineering team. Develop and manage high-performance multi-disciplinary teams to solve problems within engineering proactively. Conduct daily operational meetings and ensure that records are kept and shared across the team and that action plans agreed to within team meetings are delivered upon. Maintain the integrity of the engineering team and carry out corrective action when required. Management of the artisan and labour force with regards to HR and IR issues. Asset Care and Asset Performance: Implement the Asset Care and Asset Performance Strategy and Methodology process at the groceries site (see separate document) to achieve continuous improvement against the key areas of performance described in the Leadership section above. Make optimal use the engineering maintenance team and the key Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM’s) and their local representatives to reduce the cost of maintenance and to reduce engineering downtime. Implement best practices. Ensure all buildings and accessories are included in risk, security, safety, health, environmental, HACCP, VACCP, TACCP AND ISO 22000, 14001, 45001. Ensure all mechanical and electrical equipment and installations are maintained or installed in accordance with statutory requirements and business needs. Oversee repairs and maintenance work. Ensure that all members of the engineering team are working according to safety regulations and ensure the enforcement of food safety requirements. Be available on call out and work on weekends or when necessary to ensure optimal performance of team and effective maintenance of equipment. Perform work inspections and checks for completeness of tasks. Plan and manage weekend maintenance tasks and projects against budget. Coordinates and inspects major contract work on the electrical, refrigeration, mechanical and plumbing, and other related systems. Ensures that the building has adequate heating, lighting, and ventilation and that it is properly cleaned, maintained and in good working condition. Operational Engineering Management: Fulfil all legal and statutory requirements of the GMR (2) 7 appointment. Responsible for health and safety with regards to all equipment and plant to ensure a safe environment to operate and work on for all staff. Drive the daily / weekly maintenance planning process for the plant – prioritising, scheduling, and allocation of tasks to different discipline of the engineering department, with the assistance of the planner. Maintain the integrity of the engineering team and carry out corrective action when required. Maintain discipline and standards within the engineering team and within all areas of work on site. Project planning: Strategise capex focus on reducing plant down time and improve efficiencies of machines and lines. Ensure that health and safety requirements as per the RCL Foods standard are adhered to with regards to specifying new equipment. Process change control documentation with regards to all equipment and plant changes with records for audit purposes. Manage and control the fixed asset register and ensure that it is updated as per policy and depreciation is in line with group standards. Conduct weekly project meetings to ensure all disciplines are aligned and that capex targets dates met in view of the year planner. Handle all investigations around IOD’s to establish all the facts to ensure prevention where possible and to address unacceptable or dangerous behaviour that can lead to injuries. Safety control of contractors. Management of Safety, Health, Environment, Risk and Quality (SHERQ). Guides the engineering team to ensure that all legislative standards are achieved, and timeous action is taken. Measure and manage sustainability practices within area of responsibility. Suggest amendments to policies and practices within operational area of responsibility with the Production manager to ensure that these are kept up to date and are aligned with company objectives and standards. Ensure that documentation required within the Total Integrated Management system, is maintained, and applied consistently throughout the area of responsibility and any policy and procedure training required highlighted in the training needs analysis and action appropriately. Ensure that statutory inspections are executed as per legal and other requirements. Ensure all facilities comply with health, safety, environmental, security and other legal requirements. Identify all operational risks and develop and implement risk reduction and/or risk mitigation plans. Ensures engineering staff follow safety rules and regulations as per organisation’s safety procedures. Ensure that security access points to the premises and BMS system is in good working condition. Reporting theft and dangers on the premises. Ensures safety equipment and machinery is in good working order. Ensure that security is maintained and escalate any security concerns to the Operations Executive and SHERQ Manager. Financial Management: Manage maintenance and engineering labour costs to ensure lowest cost of production by the optimal utilisation of assets and the best of use of maintenance resources. Report on a weekly basis on actual cost KPI’s versus budget and work with team to address and areas of non-conformance or concern proactively and timeously. Report on and manage all costs. Manage any over- or underspend appropriately and ensure that issues that may result in an overspend or a financial loss are escalated at the earliest opportunity and accompanied by measures to mitigate and/or avoid such situations. Authorises plant engineering expenses within level of authority and monitor spending activity within teams to ensure compliance to financial and ethical standards. #LI-LW1
